Are you considering starting therapy in Nashville but feeling unsure about what to expect?
Starting therapy can feel daunting for a lot of people. You might have questions like, “Will I connect with my therapist?” or “How does therapy even work?” Here are a few things that I can tell you about what it's like to begin this process and some suggestions on how to continuing moving forward even though you may be apprehensive right now:
1. It’s Normal to Feel Nervous or Unsure
Walking into a therapist's office (or logging into a virtual session) for the first time can be intimidating. Many people tell me they worry about who should talk first, what they’ll say, or whether the therapist will “get” them. Remember, it’s perfectly okay to feel nervous. Warm, caring therapists like myself understand this important moment in the therapy process and will work to help you feel comfortable. I consider it a privilege to create a space where you can express yourself fully (with all the expletives you need) without judgment.
2. You Are Not Alone in Your Struggles
Balancing careers, relationships, and personal growth in a fast-paced, often overwhelming world is experienced by others too. They are often not talking about it! Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, stress, relationship issues, or feeling stuck in life, know that these are common concerns. As a relationally-oriented therapist, I'm in the session to walk with you through these struggles and assist you in developing healthy ways to manage them, but most importantly help you understand the struggles more deeply in order to address the underlying issues.
3. Therapy is a Collaborative Process
Therapy isn’t just about talking while someone listens; it’s a partnership. We will work together to explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and patterns. I frequently will guide you with questions or reflections, but the insights and solutions often come from inside you. You will be a vital resource in the process! Think of therapy as a journey where you have a supportive co-pilot.
4. It’s Okay to Take Your Time
The first few sessions are about getting to know each other. You don’t have to dive into deep topics right away. It’s important for you to be able to trust me...and that takes time. We move at your pace, respecting your comfort level while gently & kindly encouraging growth & deeper insight.
5. You Have the Power to Choose Your Therapist
Finding the right therapist can feel a bit like dating. It’s essential to find someone you feel comfortable with. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. I'm ready for them! You might ask about my approach, experience with issues like yours, or how I handle sessions. I always want you to feel heard, understood, and supported. If that isn't happening for you, we need to discuss making changes so therapy better meets your needs!
6. Therapy is an Investment in Yourself
Prioritizing your mental health is a form of self-care. Therapy can help you gain clarity, improve your relationships, and develop healthier ways to cope with life’s challenges. It’s a space where you can focus entirely on yourself, your needs, and your growth.
7. You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out
Some people hesitate to start therapy because they feel they need to have a clear goal or know exactly what’s wrong. The truth is therapy is a place to explore that uncertainty. If you’re feeling lost or unsure, that’s a valid reason to seek help. I can assist in making sense of your feelings and guide you toward clarity to develop those goals.
8. Therapy is for Everyone
There’s often a misconception that therapy is only for people in crisis. In reality, therapy is beneficial for anyone looking to understand themselves better, improve their relationships, or make meaningful changes in their lives. Whether you’re navigating a life transition or simply want to live more authentically, therapy can be a valuable and empowering resource.
